The Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP) is designed for federal employees and their families—offering employees, retirees, their families, and their survivors a wide selection of health, dental, and vision plans from all the major health insurers.
Employees have 11 paid federal holidays off each year. Paid vacation leave is determined by the length of the employee’s federal service, up to 26 days per year. Employees can carry over 30 days of vacation leave to the next leave year. Paid sick leave accrues at 4 hours per pay period for all employees, with no limit on carrying it over from year to year. There are also provisions for paid or unpaid leave to cover absences for maternity and paternity leave, military obligations, jury duty, donating blood, and voting.
A variety of training and development is available for all employees through internal classes and programs, on-the-job training and coaching, mentoring, and external learning courses. Employees may be eligible for tuition reimbursement and course material costs associated with job-related studies, and in certain circumstances, may qualify for student loan forgiveness.
As an employee, you can elect to participate in the Federal Flexible Spending Account Program (FSAFEDS), which allows employees to save money by paying eligible out-of-pocket medical/health care and dependent care expenses using pre-tax dollars.
With approved flex schedules, employees can adjust their work time – during core business hours – around their personal lives. With approved telework schedules, most employees can work from their homes or other approved locations. Participation in this program is voluntary and subject to management approval. Military and diplomatic spouses can telework overseas.
The DOE is a diverse workplace and that diversity is highlighted by its many Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). ERGs contribute to a positive and inclusive workplace where employees with different backgrounds, cultures, and talents are respected and given the opportunity to succeed.
The Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) guarantees each employee a specific monthly payment based on the employee’s age, length of creditable service, and “high three” average salary. FERS employees also may participate in the government’s Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). The TSP is a retirement savings and investment plan that can be set up similar to a 401(k) or Roth IRA plan. Employees can contribute up to 10 percent of salary into the plan, with the government matching contributions up to 5 percent. Finally, federal employees receive social security payments.
The Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) is the largest group lifeinsurance program in the world. FEGLI provides group term life insurance and most federal employees are eligible for coverage.
The Transit Benefit program was created to encourage commuters to use public transportation in an effort to reduce congestion and pollution in America’s cities and is available to employees in the DMV.
